Ying Wang Ceremony
 

During the 16th century reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, the development in the Donggang area attracted a large number of Chinese immigrants from Quanzhou and Zhangzhou in Fujian province. Feeling homesick and fearing the outbreak of epidemic diseases in a new land, these individuals crossed the ocean to Taiwan, relying solely on the blessings of Wen Wangye.
 
The purpose of the "Ying Wang" Ceremony is for Wen Wangye to invite his sworn brothers to come to Donggang, preventing the spread of epidemics and praying for peace and blessings on behalf of heaven. This ceremony, deeply intertwined with people's lives, has a long history. Initially aimed at banishing evil spirits, it evolved into a celebration of peace and security. It is a fusion of local culture and reverence for Wen Wangye. Two of the most valuable traditions preserved within the ceremony are the construction of the Wangye ship and the folk art performances (zhèntóu), both carrying significant religious and artistic meanings. Donggang's craftsmen and performing artists demonstrate outstanding skills in the construction of the Wangye Ship, symbolizing the deity's pilgrimage. While the Wangye ship was once made of bamboo and papier-mâché, it is now crafted from various types of wood.
 
The Donggang "Ying Wang" Ceremony is the grandest celebration in Taiwan, lasting eight days and seven nights, occurring once every three years, in the Years of the Ox, Dragon, Goat, and Dog. The exact dates of the ceremony are announced only after consulting Wen Wangye.
 
The "Ying Wang" Ceremony will be held from September 28th to October 5th, 2024. Friends from all over the world are welcome to Donggang to experience this unique folk festival.
